Job Description

Description The Crime Scene Investigator performs technical work related to the collection, processing, analysis, preservation, and disposition of crime scene evidence and other types of property. The investigator identifies, documents, preserves, processes, and collects physical evidence found at crime scenes, maintaining detailed records in accordance with county, state, and federal rules. The role requires initiative, independent judgment, and frequent contact with the public. The position involves typical hazards of law enforcement work. Essential Job Functions Analyze, document, preserve, and collect evidence. Photograph, video, sketch, measure, and document all evidence collected from crime scenes. Write detailed reports about crime scenes and actions taken. Preserve crime scene evidence following standard procedures. Identify and collect latent prints, suspected blood evidence, clothing, ballistics, trace, arson, drug, shoe, tire, forgery, question document, and electronic evidence. Process latent prints found at crime scenes and review prints for quality in the Crime Lab. Provide technical expertise and direction at crime scenes. Search crime scenes using alternate light sources. Testify in court proceedings. Reconstruct crime scenes for blood spatter interpretation. Use Luminol/Bluestar to search for latent blood and test suspected blood using Phenolphthalein. Document exact dimensions of crime scenes using various techniques. Prepare courtroom‑quality diagrams with important evidentiary items highlighted. Prepare packages and submit evidence to the UCSO or State Crime Lab. Enhance still images using photographic software. Research new forensic procedures and maintain Crime Scene Certification. Process videos taken from crime scenes for enhancement. Assist officers with evidence packaging and submission to the UCSO or State Crime Lab. Remain on standby, respond to crime scenes as requested, work shifts and on‑call schedules. Serve as an advisor for Sheriff’s Office personnel on all forensic matters. Monitor quantity and restock evidence collection materials. Maintain an orderly Crime Lab at all times. Lecture at local schools as a representative about Crime Scene Investigation techniques. Photograph community events for the Sheriff’s Office. Dual Functions – Digital Forensics Cross‑train and obtain certifications in Digital Forensics. Complete digital forensic examinations on devices including cellular phones, tablets, and computers. Identify, document, collect, and analyze digital evidence. Produce comprehensive written reports of all processes used. Preserve evidence integrity, recover deleted/erased, hidden, and encrypted data, and maintain chain of custody. Assist detectives and agency personnel with technical expertise. Utilize forensic tools and software for data acquisition. Disassemble, examine, and identify computer systems, hardware components, and operational conditions. Prepare diagrams, evidence, and reports for court presentation; provide testimony as requested. Maintain training, certifications, and professional memberships; qualify as an expert witness in digital forensics. Minimum Qualifications Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Physical or Natural Sciences, Criminal/Forensic Sciences or related field and one year of crime scene experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Complete a minimum of 48 hours of Crime Scene Certification Board approved instruction within one year of employment and obtain Crime Scene Investigator Certification through the International Association for Identification (IAI) within the first 24 months of employment. Complete a minimum of 40 hours of continuing education/professional development credits annually to maintain certification. Possession of a valid driver’s license. Physical ability to operate crime scene equipment, vehicles, and lift up to 50 pounds; meet medium physical demand requirements.
