Job Description

In coordination with and reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Vice President of Individual and Institutional Giving leads development efforts and execution of principal giving, major giving, planned giving, and mid-level giving fundraising goals and activities at the White House Historical Association. Donors include individuals, families, foundations, and corporations. The Vice President of Individual and Institutional Giving also works with a portfolio of assigned prospects to cultivate, solicit, and steward top Association prospects, securing seven-figures of new commitments each year. This role works independently in assigned areas and takes responsibility for the strategic direction of front-line gift officer work including prospect identification, solicitation, proposal development, and related support activities.

The Vice President hires, manages, and develops the full team of front-line fundraisers at all levels of the organization and is responsible for all fundraiser solicitation assignments and progress. The Vice President establishes and maintains relationships with all levels of Association constituents, including members of the Board of Directors and National Council, Association leadership, division leadership, staff, donors, and volunteers. The Vice President is a key peer colleague to the newly created role of Associate Vice President of Development Strategy and Operations. The VP and AVP of Development Strategy and Operations will collaborate and partner to ensure front-line fundraising is able to thrive through successful processes and systems that facilitate philanthropy.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of assigned donors who make principal gifts ($1,000,000+), major gifts ($50,000-$999,999), and leadership annual gifts ($1,200 to $49,999);
  • Coach and direct all front-line gift officers under the Vice President’s management, supporting each gift officer to achieve goals at 8-, 7-, 6-, and 5- figure gift levels; provide leadership to achieve both individual and Association goals;
  • Hire, evaluate, and retain staff; manage career coaching and professional development for direct reports;
  • Accountable for the performance of direct reports, completing year-end performance reviews; occasional coverage for team members as needed;
  • Implement best practices for achieving fundraising goals while instilling a sense of urgency, passion, and collegiality among the gift officer team;
  • Establish ongoing relationships with prospects and donors through in-person visits, video calls, phone calls, and meaningful contacts;
  • Take responsibility for a wide range of fundraising activities, including identifying new prospective donors and volunteers, providing consistent stewardship, and coordinating volunteer fundraising efforts;
  • Build a principal giving function to consistently secure seven- and eight- figure gifts in support of the Association;
  • Coach and manage donor relations staff lead in the effort to strengthen donor retention and upgrade the pipeline of current donors at the leadership annual, major, and principal gift levels;
  • Develop and mature a fundraising function that leverages the museum experience at The People’s House: A White House Experience;
  • Manage principal and major gift cultivation and solicitation strategy across assigned regions;
  • Staff board members, the Association President, the CDO and others in visits with potential funders, both in Washington, D.C. and nationwide;
  • Stay informed on current Association initiatives and activities;
  • Improve donor stewardship, cultivation, and engagement activities, including the National Council on White House History;
  • Work closely with the Chief Development Officer to align fundraising efforts with other institutional activities and objectives;
  • Continually enhance skills related to the use of rapidly changing technology and communications best practices.
  • Manage an active portfolio of at least 50 assigned donors and prospects who have a minimum gift capacity of $500,000; track solicitation assignments and progress to achieve annual fundraising goals.
  • Conduct a minimum of 50 in-person visits per year with assigned donors and prospects.
  • Raise a minimum of $1 Million within the first 12 months of hire; raise a minimum of $3.5 Million annually, after completing one full year of work in assigned role.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Thirteen years of relevant professional experience in non-profit fundraising is required.
  • Six years of management in non-profit fundraising is required with demonstrated success hiring, managing, and developing direct reports including front-line fundraisers at leadership annual giving, major, and principal gift levels.
  • Knowledge and skills in complex prospect strategy for individuals, families, corporations, and foundations is required.
  • Experience with principal gifts, major gifts, planned giving, leadership annual giving, and annual giving is required. Experience with museum or place-based fundraising is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders to achieve shared goals is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to continually assess and strengthen a front-line program to produce results in a fast-paced environment is required.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, organizational skills, and attention to detail are required.
  • Passion for White House History and American History is preferred.
  • Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends and travel for donor and prospect work is required.
